Owens Hits 2 Homers for Titans
Ryan Owens hit two home runs, giving him seven this season, and had six runs batted in to help Cal State Fullerton defeat Pacific, 13-7, in a Big West Conference baseball game Thursday in Stockton.
Chris Beck had four singles and four RBIs for Fullerton (26-5, 10-0 in conference), which won its 16th consecutive game and extended its lead to three games over second-place Pacific (22-10, 7-3).
Matt Sorenson (7-0) went eight innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs with no walks and seven strikeouts. Fullerton led, 12-0, before Pacific scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Fullerton’s Spencer Oborn had two singles to extend his hitting streak to 30 games. Catcher Jeff Gates hit his second home run for the Titans, who had 18 hits.
The teams continue the series today and it ends Saturday.
In the Sun West softball tournament:
Southern California College wins twice--Alicia Groshon had three hits and five RBIs to help SCC defeat St. Catherine (Minn.), 16-4, in a five-inning mercy-rule game.
Rachel Carver had two hits and two RBIs and Gina Liebengood pitched five innings of two-hit, shutout relief to lead SCC past St. Mary’s (Iowa), 6-1. SCC is 28-9.
In nonconference softball:
Concordia 6-6, Concordia (Minn.) 4-8--Crystal Rosenthal and Melissa Naylon each had two hits and drove in two runs as host Concordia won the first game.
Cynthia Molleman and Carrie Shankles had three hits each also in the first game of the Eagles (13-18).
Naylon and Vanessa La Torre hit home runs in the second game for Concordia, which gave up 16 hits.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Fresno State 6, UC Irvine 3--Dora Djilianova, ranked 10th in the nation in singles, defeated Irvine’s Darian Chappell, 6-0, 6-3, to lead host Fresno (13-4), ranked 19th in the nation. Irvine is 7-11.
