O.C. Volleyball Coach Hired by Santa Clara

Jon Wallace has been named women’s volleyball coach at Santa Clara, Athletic Director Carroll Williams announced.

Wallace, a graduate of Estancia High in 1984, has been an assistant coach at Pepperdine the last seven years. Santa Clara finished 20-10 last season, earning an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament.

Wallace was an assistant men’s volleyball coach at Orange Coast in 1990 and ’91 and head men’s coach at Golden West in 1992 and ’93.

Melissa Anne Villa of Whittier Christian was selected as a finalist for the spring CIF Sportsmanship/Citizenship Award. Villa competed in softball, basketball and volleyball for the Heralds and is a senior class student council representative. She is a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions and helped sponsor Christmas gift and Thanksgiving food drives.

Elizabeth Schunk of Novato High and Jeremiah Fillo of Downieville High were selected the spring winners by the CIF committee. The award was established this year and is presented after each sports season. Nominations are made by the schools.

Chivas U.S.A. will meet Atlas of Guadalajara, Mexico, in a soccer match at 8 p.m., April 20 at Cal State Fullerton.

Adult tickets are $12 for reserved seats, $10 for general admission. Children 10 and under are free. Proceeds benefit affiliations of Chivas U.S.A.

More than 10,000 runners will participate this weekend in the 15th Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race.

Last year, the Santa Ana Police Department team led the race for several hours, finishing 11th in a field of 200 teams. The Anaheim Police Department team was 12th.

Runners take off at 10 a.m. today on Highway 127, about 19 miles north of Baker High. The 20 race legs vary from flat stretches of desert to 5,600 feet in elevation. Award ceremonies will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at the Rio Hotel’s convention center.

Joining the police department teams from Santa Ana and Anaheim this year are those from Brea, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, La Habra and Newport Beach. In addition, also participating are teams representing Orange County’s judges, marshals, sheriffs and district attorney investigators.
