Versatile Svitek Is on a Roll

Junior Will Svitek of Newbury Park High won two events and placed third in two others to help the Panthers defeat Simi Valley and host Moorpark in a Marmonte League track and field meet on Thursday.

Svitek, winner of the intermediate boys’ (ages 15-16) decathlon in the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics last summer, won the shotput with a school record of 57-2 1/2 and the long jump with a leap of 20-6 1/4. Newbury Park totaled 72 points to Moorpark’s 54 and Simi Valley’s 44.

Svitek finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.9 seconds and in the discus at 141-5 for defending league-champion Newbury Park (7-1, 5-0 in league meets).

Tim Adrian of Moorpark (5-1 in league meets) set two school records in winning the discus in 184-0 and placing second in the shotput in 55-1.

In another boys’ meet:

Ventura 96, Dos Pueblos 31--Sophomore Chris Foster won the 110 high hurdles in a career-best 15.0, the 300 intermediates in 43.8 and the high jump at 5-10 to help the Cougars clinch their second consecutive Channel League title in a meet at Ventura.

Preston Biller won the long jump at 21-1 and the triple jump at 39-9 1/2 for Ventura (6-0, 4-0).

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Hart 309, Valencia 315, Westlake 327--Jeff Siembieda fired a three-under-par 58 and Ryan Wyman shot a one-under 60 to help the Indians (32-1-1) finish four-over-par in a nonleague match at Vista Valencia Golf Course.

Monroe 213, Garfield 215--Glenn Wright shot an even-par 35 for Monroe in a City 3-A League match at Whittier Narrows Golf Course in Rosemead.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Grant 4, North Hollywood 0--Josh Opos defeated Jason Potell, 6-1, 6-1, to help visiting Grant (10-1, 8-1) win its first Valley Pac-8 Conference title this decade.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Monroe def. Canoga Park, 15-1, 15-10, 15-7--Duke Ta had 10 kills for Monroe (12-0, 9-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Canoga Park.
