Northridge Gets a Sweep After Working Overtime

Summer Richardson’s two-run home run in the 16th inning Saturday ended the second-longest game in Cal State Northridge softball history in the first game of a Big West Conference doubleheader at Northridge.

The Matadors swept the Titans, 5-3, 7-4, to stay in the conference title chase.

Tara Glaister (15-11) went the distance for the Matadors (24-20, 10-7 in conference play), striking out eight and allowing nine hits in the opener.

Richardson drove in the tying run on a groundout in the 12th after Fullerton (29-20, 8-6) took a 3-2 lead.

In the second game, Northridge scored three runs in the sixth to snap a 3-3 tie. Jessica Creith hit a run-scoring double and Jamie Moore added a two-run single in the inning.

Creith (2-1) pitched three scoreless innings of relief.

Redlands 7, Cal Lutheran 3--Yvette McNally had two hits but the Regals (19-13, 13-5) lost a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament game at Claremont Mudd-Scripps.

BASEBALL

Glendale 14, Pierce 6--Matt Hellman capped a torrid week with five hits, including two home runs and a double, and drove in four runs for the Vaqueros in a Western State Conference Southern Division victory at Pierce.

The Vaqueros (19-19, 11-7 in conference play) took sole possession of first place in the division, a game ahead of Pierce (20-12, 10-8).

Wes Hutchison (6-6) went the distance, striking out eight. He hit a home run, a double and a single, and drove in four runs.

Andy Gadt of Glendale had three hits, including two doubles.

Hellman, from Burroughs High, had five hits Tuesday, including a school-record four doubles, in a 13-6 victory over Valley.

On Thursday, Hellman’s eighth-inning single drove in the winning run in a 3-2 victory over Canyons.

Canyons 5, Bakersfield 2--Brad Fogel’s two-run pinch double highlighted a four-run seventh inning for the Cougars in a WSC Southern Division victory at Canyons.

Matt Tatsuno’s two-run home run gave Bakersfield a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Canyons pulled even with an unearned run in the bottom half before Fogel’s big hit.

Mike Preski (4-1) struck out six and allowed seven hits in seven innings. Sean Zortman pitched two scoreless innings for his second save.

Jeremy Mushinski homered for Canyons (16-24, 9-11).

Hancock 8, Ventura 7--Donny Warrecker hit a three-run home run for Hancock (25-12, 14-4) in a WSC Northern Division game at Ventura.

Ventura (19-16, 9-10) committed three errors in the sixth, when Hancock scored twice to take a 6-5 lead.

Nick Gontmaher had three hits for Ventura.

Moorpark 2, Santa Barbara 1--Brandon Voorhees had two hits, including a run-scoring double, and Chris Barbettini allowed one hit and struck out seven in six innings in a WSC Northern Division victory at Moorpark.

Cuesta 9, Oxnard 8--Robert Avila had three hits and Manuel Romero hit a two-run home run for the Condors (14-18, 7-12) in a WSC Northern Division victory at Oxnard.

Chapman 13, The Master’s 7--Aaron Penberthy had three hits and Ty Sager hit a home run for the Mustangs (33-10) in a nonconference loss at Master’s.

Whittier 10-6, Cal Lutheran 8-12--Brad Smith hit a grand slam during a nine-run second to help the Kingsmen salvage a split in a SCIAC doubleheader at Whittier.

Smith had three hits in the game, Eric Medina had four and Eric Buben had a home run, single and four RBIs for Cal Lutheran.

Buben hit a two-run double and Nick Lawson had three hits and drove in a run for the Kingsmen (26-9, 17-4) in the first game.
