2 Moderate Quakes Rattle Nevada Border
Two moderately strong earthquakes, magnitudes 5.6 and 5.2, struck a remote desert area along the California-Nevada border 130 miles northwest of Las Vegas on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The 9:06 and 9:27 a.m temblors were felt in Las Vegas casinos and more strongly in Death Valley National Park, to the west of the epicenter.
No damage or injuries were reported. A 5.6 magnitude quake occurring in an urban area usually causes some damage, but there are no towns near the sites of Sunday’s quakes.
The nearest landmark to the temblors is Scotty’s Castle at the northeastern tip of Death Valley.
The quakes were also felt in Bishop, 70 miles to the west.
Closer to Los Angeles, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck at 2:08 a.m. Sunday eight miles southwest of Castaic Lake, according to a preliminary report from Caltech. No damage or injuries were reported.
