A 29-year-old woman and her 5-year-old daughter, last seen driving to a Ventura beach, are missing, police said Wednesday night.

Ventura residents Kim Alain Barrios-Bauer and her daughter, Alaina, left the residence of the woman’s mother at 11 a.m. Tuesday, saying they were going to the beach for some exercise and would return that afternoon, according to Ventura Police Sgt. George Morris.

The pair have been staying at the mother’s home on Preble Street in Ventura since Barrios-Bauer and her husband separated about 18 months ago, Morris said.

Barrios-Bauer’s husband, who is also a Ventura resident, has been interviewed by police and was very cooperative, Morris said. He is not a suspect in the disappearance, the sergeant said.

“It is unusual for Kim to leave and not notify her mother when she would be returning or for her not to call if she wasn’t coming home,” Ventura Police Lt. Gary McCaskill said.

Barrios-Bauer and her daughter left in the woman’s 1996 gold Nissan Sentra, which has a California license plate of 3NZL562. The car has tinted windows and a Jack-in-the-Box head on the antenna.

Barrios-Bauer is white, 5 feet 7, 140 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a T-shirt, blue shorts and tan boots and was carrying her wallet and a cellular telephone, Morris said.

Alaina is about 4 feet, 50 pounds and has blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a white sweater with a yellow or white shirt, blue shorts and tennis shoes.

On Wednesday, officers searched beaches between Oxnard and north Ventura and also contacted Barrios-Bauer’s family and friends who live in San Diego and in Fairfield, Morris said. No one has seen or heard from the pair.

“There’s something wrong. This is way out of character and just isn’t right,” Morris said.
