Bengals’ Moore Injures His Neck

Cincinnati Bengal safety Kelvin Moore was strapped to a backboard and taken from the field on a cart Friday night after his head hit the knee of Detroit receiver Brian Stablein during the Lions’ 16-0 exhibition victory at Pontiac, Mich.

Bengal trainer Paul Sparling said Moore was being treated for fractures of the two neck vertebrae closest to his skull. Team spokesman Jack Brennan said later that only one vertebra was fractured.

Sparling said Moore had full motor and sensory functions with no paralysis.

In other exhibition games, Arizona quarterback Jake Plummer sprained his right thumb in a 27-17 victory over Tennessee at Tempe, Ariz. The injury is not believed to be serious. . . . Buffalo rookie Jeremy McDaniel was ruled out of bounds when he caught a two-point conversion pass with 51 seconds remaining, enabling the Washington Redskins to defeat the Bills, 20-19, at Landover, Md. . . . Backup quarterbacks Jeff Lewis and Dameyune Craig were sharp in Carolina’s 20-13 victory over Pittsburgh at Charlotte, N.C. . . . Vinny Testaverde threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Wayne Chrebet late in the first half as the New York Jets beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 10-9, at East Rutherford, N.J. The Jets also obtained quarterback Rick Mirer from Green Bay for an undisclosed draft choice.

New England’s Ty Law agreed to a contract extension that will pay the cornerback $50 million over the next seven years. . . . Arizona offensive lineman Ernest Dye will have surgery Sunday to repair nerves damaged in a car accident that nearly severed his arm.

Kick returner-defensive back Tremain Mack, who has had a series of alcohol-abuse arrests, will miss the Bengals’ first four games under a suspension announced by the league. . . . Minnesota defensive back Orlando Thomas was put on probation for a year after pleading no contest to a simple battery charge from an assault on his wife.
