Time to Shake Up Baseball’s Status Quo
OK, we’ve had enough of the made-up statistic, “Runners left if scoring position, 2 out.” It’s run its course. It’s served its purpose (whatever that was). Now, get rid of it!
It’s a bad, dumb statistic. If a “negative” stat is really required in today’s box scores, I suggest, “Runner left at third base, less than two outs.”
The new negative stat could even describe how horrible the failed at-bat had been (e.g., “Failed to score runner from third, less than one out, didn’t even get ball past a drawn-in infield!”)
But it would be OK with me if you just remove all negative batting stats from box scores, as long as you replace them with the worst transgression that can happen at the ballpark: “Foul balls hit into one deck and fumbled out of that level to the deck below!”
