BEACH VOLLEYBALL / MANHATTAN BEACH OPEN : Swatik, Whitmarsh Show Who’s Boss

Looks like David Swatik is sleeping outside for the next few days.

At the very least, he might be without water and power for a while.

That’s what happens when you beat your landlord in a game of beach volleyball, let alone in a quarterfinal of the Manhattan Beach Open, which is what Swatik and partner Mike Whitmarsh did to Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana Saturday.

With the 14-12 victory, Swatik, who rents the guest house at Blanton’s Santa Monica home, won for the second straight time in Southern California. Two months ago, he won his first pro championship at the Hermosa Beach Open.

But he still has plenty of work to do before he pockets his first Manhattan Beach title.

“It’s the most prestigious event,” said Swatik, who played at nearby Mira Costa High. “All the players want to win it at least once in their career.”

In another quarterfinal, Lee LeGrande and Brent Doble once again had too much grit and determination for Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson.

LeGrande and Doble defeated the top-seeded duo, 15-5, for the fifth time in six games this year.

LeGrande credited a three-month period earlier in the year in which he and Doble trained with Kiraly and Johnson. “It’s tendencies,” LeGrande said. “You learn how to pick a team apart.”

LeGrande and Doble will play Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego in a semifinal today. Swatik and Whitmarsh will play Eduardo Bacil and Adam Jewell in the other semifinal.

In women’s play, Barbra Fontana, Jen Meredith and Holly McPeak qualified for the inaugural Queen of the Beach tournament next month in Las Vegas.

Janice Harrer, Lisa Arce, Linda Hanley and Patty Dodd will compete for the final berth today.
