Borisoff Bumped Out in the Quarterfinals

Brooke Borisoff of Agoura defeated Melissa Nguyen of Campbell Hall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section individual girls’ tennis tournament before losing Thursday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club in Newport Beach.

Borisoff was beating Nguyen, 6-3, 3-0, when Nguyen retired because of illness in the round of 16. Borisoff fell to Melissa Esmero of Mater Dei, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

Borisoff was the only singles player from the region to reach the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Luana Magnani of San Marino eliminated Yasmin Fisher of Buena, 6-1, 6-1. Kelly Schmandt of San Marcos defeated Stephanie Berg of Harvard-Westlake, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, in the round of 16 earlier Thursday.

Magnani won the girls’ 16 division of the Southern California Junior Sectional tournament earlier this year, and she was Southern Section runner-up to Tiffany Brymer of Rio Mesa last season.

In doubles play, Vanessa Everly and Brittany Bierman of Calabasas advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to second-seeded Kristen Case and Jenny Meyer of Newport Harbor, 6-1, 6-3.

Everly and Bierman finished the season with a 49-4 record.

Erin Herrell and Casey Knutson of Mater Dei defeated Andrea Leewong and Kathy Habuki of Calabasas in the round of 16, 6-0, 6-2.

Leewong and Habuki finished the season with a 50-3 record.
