Lord, Trotter Help Brea Olinda Girls Beat Don Lugo in Overtime

Jackie Lord scored 21 points, including five three-pointers, and Chelsea Trotter added 20 points and 12 rebounds as Brea Olinda defeated Chino Don Lugo, 79-72, in overtime to win the Rancho Grande girls’ basketball tournament Saturday night.

Diana Taurasi, an All-American senior guard who’s headed for Connecticut, scored 41 points for Don Lugo, which erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to forge a 64-64 tie at the end of regulation.

In overtime, the teams traded free throws until the last 1 1/2 minutes, when Brea Olinda (4-0) took a six-point lead. Daberi Bonnewitz scored four points and Lord made two free throws to seal the win.

In the Coyote Classic boys’ tournament:

Magnolia 69, Buena Park 67--Geoffrey Clayton hit two free throws with 14 seconds left in overtime to lead Magnolia over host Buena Park in the championship game.

Buena Park’s DeAndre Gibson, who finished with 22 points, sent the game into overtime with a layup at the buzzer.

In the Bolsa Grande/Pacifica boys’ tournament:

Los Alamitos 55, Claremont 52 -- Los Alamitos (4-0) led the entire game to win the championship. Ryan Keller led the Griffins with 13 points and Jeff Grgas and Brian Rakusin each had 11 rebounds.

Edison 57, Bolsa Grande 56--Edison went on a 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to take a 43-40 lead in the third-place game. Kyong-Su Min led the Chargers (2-2) with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

University 67, Estancia 58--Andy Lawrence scored 17 points, including 12 of 12 from the free-throw line, to help University (3-1) to a fifth-place finish. The Trojans were 20 for 22 from the line as a team. Mike Dale led the scoring for University with 18 points, and Darshaun Garner scored 23 points for Estancia (2-2).

In the La Habra boys’ tournament:

El Dorado 63, La Habra 47--Tournament MVP Quinn Hawking had 21 points and David Patten had 18 to lead El Dorado (4-0) to the championship.

In the Orange Lutheran boys’ tournament:

Orange Lutheran 76, Cypress 66--Jason Whieldon scored 33 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead Orange Lutheran to the title. Taylor Gavin had nine points and six steals for the Lancers, who went on a 17-8 run to start the game and never trailed after that. Pat Salyer (14 points) made all eight of his free throws in the fourth quarter.

In the boys’ Taco Company Invitational:

Troy 56, Servite 40--Sean Christiansen scored 14 points and Mark Alberg and Alex Raco added 12 each to lead Troy (4-0) to the title. Rodel Lizan was the high scorer for Servite (3-1) with 11, including three three-pointers.

In the Fullerton Vernie Ford girls’ tournament:

Norco 58, Valencia 46--Norco outscored Valencia, 37-21, in the second half to beat the Tigers in the championship game. Valencia’s Monica Jackley, averaging 25 points a game, fouled out two minutes into the fourth quarter and finished with only nine points.

Santiago 57, Aliso Niguel 55 (OT)--Stephanie Reupena had 28 points to lead Santiago (3-1) to a third-place finish. Julia Pederson scored 32 points for the Wolverines (2-2).

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson girls’ tournament:

El Dorado 64, Compton Dominguez 51--Melissa Jacobs had 23 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals as El Dorado (3-1) beat Dominguez (2-2) for third place.

In the Lady Centurion girls’ tournament:

Irvine 71, Century 56--Tournament MVP Kristin Thawley scored 16 points to help Irvine (4-0) win the title. Charlenda Van Buren led Century (3-1) with 15 points.

In the Woodbridge girls’ tip-off classic:

Mater Dei 54, Edison 33--Edison cut an early 15-point deficit to six in the fourth quarter before Mater Dei (4-0) scored 15 points to win the title. Mater Dei’s Kristin Hayman and Edison’s Rachel Ziemann each scored 12 points. Edison is 2-2.
