Southwest 30, Moorpark 29--The Raiders allowed three touchdowns in the final 9:20, including the game-winning score as time expired in the WSC Classic at Moorpark.

The Raiders (6-5) took a 29-8 lead with 12:38 to play when Bryant Phipps scored on an 18-yard run. Then they faltered.

John Hildreth’s 12-yard pass to Devin Green with five seconds to play and Treveon Fulton’s two-point conversion run avenged Southwest’s 21-20 loss to Moorpark on Oct. 23.

Moorpark seemingly had the game won when Jason Pleasant intercepted a fourth-down pass by Hildreth but fumbled at the Raider 12, giving Southwest (7-4) one last chance to win.

Raider Coach Jim Bittner said he believed Pleasant was down before the fumble and Hildreth had crossed the line of scrimmage before retreating and throwing the ball, making it an illegal pass.

Bittner also questioned the spotting of the ball on Emmanuel Evans’ run on fourth-and-one, which was ruled just short at the Southwest 46 with 2:14 to play.

“I thought we had that by half a yard,” Bittner said. “There were some strange things that happened at the end of the game. None of it was intentional, but it happens. It will go down in the books as a win for them, but I told our players we did not lose this game.”

The loss overshadowed Evans’ 271 yards and two touchdowns in 40 carries, giving the former Birmingham High standout 1,052 yards in an injury-plagued sophomore season. Phipps had 77 yards in seven carries.

Moorpark’s Farhaad Azimi attempted only four passes with no completions. His last pass was intercepted at the Southwest three and the Cougars scored on the ensuing drive, cutting the deficit to 29-22 with 3:25 to play.
