Moorpark Wins State Wrestling Title

Arsen Aleksanyan won the 133-pound title and Moorpark College edged Palomar, 107 1/2-98, to claim the state community college wrestling championship on Saturday at Skyline College in San Bruno.

Aleksanyan, a freshman, decisioned defending champion Heath Sims of Cerritos, 2-1, in overtime and was selected the meet’s outstanding wrestler.

Juan Roman (141 pounds) and Cristobal Gonzalez (184) each placed second for the Raiders, who won their fourth state title of the decade.

Saul Lucatero (149) and Eddie Lucatero (157) each finished third and Younas Woldu (133) was fourth for Moorpark.

FOOTBALL

* Quarterback Jonathon Brewster of Notre Dame High has been selected player of the year in the Mission League. Quarterback John Sciarra of St. Francis and running back Trevin Lund of Notre Dame were chosen co-most valuable backs and defensive lineman Travis Johnson of Notre Dame was selected most valuable lineman.

* Joe Glenn, who guided Northern Colorado to NCAA Division II titles in 1996 and 1997, was named coach at Montana on Monday, replacing Mick Dennehy, who resigned last week after four seasons to become coach at Utah State.

BASEBALL

* Mark Parent, a former major league catcher, will become the fourth manager in the five-year history of the Lancaster JetHawks.

Parent will replace Darrin Garner, who will be reassigned within the Seattle Mariners, the parent club of the JetHawks.

JetHawk assistants for the 2000 season also were announced by the Mariners. Steve Peck will be the pitching coach, Dana Williams will be the batting coach and Troy McIntosh will be the trainer.

Parent has spent 21 years in professional baseball, including 10 seasons as a major league player with eight different teams.

* The 1979 and 1992 Pepperdine baseball teams were inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday at a ceremony on campus.

The ’92 team won the College World Series, defeating Cal State Fullerton in the final. The ’79 team finished third in the CWS.

GOLF

* The Pepperdine women’s team signed Australians Katherine Hull and Lindsey Wright to letters of intent. They will enroll in January and begin competing immediately.

They are the third and fourth Australian players signed by Coach Laurie Gibbs.

SWIMMING

* Distance freestyler Katherine Pilchard, a senior at Woodland High in Fresno, has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge in the fall.
