Badran-Grycan, Carter Share Volleyball Honor

Senior setter Jennifer Badran-Grycan and senior hitter Lauren Carter of Palisades were selected City Section co-players of the year in girls’ volleyball by section coaches.

Badran-Grycan, last year’s player of the year, and Carter helped lead the Dolphins to their third consecutive City title with a 15-8, 6-15, 16-14, 15-10 victory over Sylmar on Nov. 19.

Badran-Grycan had 19 kills, Carter 20 in the title match as Palisades finished 16-1 and won its seventh title of the decade and 21st since girls’ volleyball became a sanctioned sport in the section in 1973.

Other members of the all-City team are: junior Nancy Ariza of Sylmar; junior Ally Cabaot (Palisades); junior Stephanie Cisneros (Sylmar); senior Youssra Marjoua (Poly); junior Cynthia Rachiel (Venice), junior Margot Wallace (Van Nuys) and senior Nancy Zaragoza (Garfield).

Girls’ individual tennis semifinals will be played Friday at the Warner Center Racket Club in Woodland Hills.

One match pits defending champion Jessica Roland of Hollywood against Jasmin Dao of Granada Hills.

Judith De Vera of Carson plays Yelena Olshanskaya of Fairfax in the other semifinal.

In doubles, Caryn Linder and Shannon Slotnick of Granada Hills will play teammates Robin Meselson and Michal Zeituni in one semifinal.

Andrea Blieden and Jennifer Steinberg of Granada Hills play Jennifer Lin and Setarah Safii of Palisades in the other semifinal.

Championship matches in singles and doubles will be played Monday.

Friday’s Invitational and Championship division football games will be televised live by KLCS-TV, said Barbara Fiege, commissioner of athletics for the section.

The Invitational game between Banning and Gardena begins at 5 p.m.

The Championship between Carson and Crenshaw begins at 8.
