GAME DAY / A Look at Today’s Key Matchups

HIGH SCHOOL

* HART (13-0) vs. VALENCIA (10-3)

At College of the Canyons, 7:30 p.m.

Hart, riding a 22-game winning streak into its second consecutive Southern Section Division III final, has won its four games against Valencia by an average margin of 23 points. The Vikings played Hart even in the first half of a Foothill League game six weeks ago, but they were shut out and limited to 61 yards in the second half of a 42-21 loss. Valencia can’t afford mistakes against high-scoring Hart, a quick-strike team that averages 42.3 points a game. Viking running back Manuel White, who moved to fourth on the state’s all-time rushing list last week with 6,686 yards, has 2,444 yards and 37 touchdowns this season, averaging 8.5 yards a carry. Hart held White to 93 yards in 28 carries in October. Hart quarterback Kyle Matter, who has completed 67% of his passes for 3,604 yards and 46 touchdowns, will work against a Valencia defense that has 20 interceptions. Matter’s favorite targets are Jared Bazar, with 64 catches and 14 touchdowns, and Chris Ciccone, with 42 catches and 10 touchdowns. The Indians have a solid running team as well, with sophomore Tim Gregory rushing for nearly 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns.

* NORDHOFF (11-2) vs. ST. BONAVENTURE (13-0)

At Ventura High, 7 p.m.

These familiar foes enter the Division XI final on a roll, with St. Bonaventure looking to complete an unbeaten season and Nordhoff attempting to extend a 10-game winning streak. St. Bonaventure defeated Nordhoff, 25-7, in a nonleague game at Nordhoff on Sept. 24. The teams met for the Division X title in 1996, when St. Bonaventure rallied from a 14-0 deficit to win, 18-14. The Seraphs’ victory in the third week of the season was Nordhoff’s last loss. St. Bonaventure had a dozen players ill with flu last week during a 44-20 semifinal victory over Riverside Banning, but most have recuperated. Nordhoff upset top-seeded Cathedral, 41-27, last week behind running back Jessie Hawkins, who rushed for a school-record 302 yards and five touchdowns. Hawkins has run for 1,902 yards and 24 touchdowns in 241 carries, an average of 7.9 yards per carry. Sophomore running back Lorenzo Booker of St. Bonaventure has rushed for 2,361 yards and 34 touchdowns, with an average of 8.9 yards per carry. The Seraphs, who have six shutouts, have outscored opponents by an average of 43-8. No defensive slouch itself, Nordhoff allows 16.8 points per game.

* KILPATRICK (9-4) vs. PARACLETE (10-3)

At Antelope Valley College, 7:30 p.m.

These teams are meeting in the Division XII final for the second consecutive season. Paraclete, two-time defending section champion, won the 1998 final, 25-14, and has defeated the Mustangs six consecutive times, most recently a 36-20 victory for the Alpha League championship on Nov. 5. The Spirits, who have lost only one game to a Southern Section team in three years, are seeking their 12th consecutive playoff victory. Jermaine Marshall of Kilpatrick needs only 32 yards to break the state season rushing record of 3,523 yards, set by David Dotson of Moreno Valley Valley View in 1991. Sophomore Curtis Brown of Paraclete has rushed for 2,494 yards and 27 touchdowns. Marshall and Brown have rushed for 700 and 673 yards, respectively, in three playoff games. Both teams pulled upsets in the semifinals. Paraclete received clutch performances from all-purpose back Michael Washington and quarterback Rob Fockaert to topple No. 1-seeded Rosamond, 47-26. Marshall rushed for more than 200 yards for the 11th time this season to help the Mustangs defeat No. 2 Riverside Notre Dame, 42-35. Marshall has scored 56 touchdowns, 52 rushing, and needs three touchdowns to tie the state record of 59, set by DeShaun Foster of Tustin in 1997.
