L.A. Baptist Courts Church-Going Lineup

If any team is going to be successful putting up prayer shots, it’s the L.A. Baptist High girls’ team.

The Knights’ roster includes the daughters of four pastors.

Senior guard Jena Iwata, sophomore forwards Ashley Frazier and Hillary Roth, and freshman forward Allyson Felix each have fathers who have served as heads of their respective churches.

Would Coach Mary Christiansen rather have the daughters of four pastors or four NBA all-stars?

“Can I have two of each?” Christiansen replied.

Taryn Milburn of Moorpark continues to grow.

At 5 feet 10 1/2, the sophomore forward has grown almost two inches since last season.

“I still need two more inches out of her,” said her father, Coach Brent Milburn. “I love it when she comes downstairs late at night and says her knees hurt. It means she’s still growing.”

Highland’s girls had to survive their first five games without 6-1 senior center Lamarra Burleson, who was sidelined after spraining her ankle on the eve of the Bulldogs’ season opener.

Burleson returned to the starting lineup on Tuesday night and had 14 points and 18 rebounds in a 41-37 victory over Saugus.

“She’s as important to us as water is to a plant,” Coach Ron Haywood said.

Coach Dave Munroe of the Hart girls’ team won his 200th career game on Monday in a 52-44 nonleague victory over Highland.

St. Bonaventure has suited up only seven players for each of its first six games because its other five players are still participating on the football team, which plays Nordhoff for the Southern Section Division XI title tonight.

Two of the missing players are projected starters.

“I told the team that we can’t wait for them, that this is going to happen every year the way [the football team is] going,” Coach Gil Kim said. “I’ve found out a lot about the seven guys I have.”
