Mater Dei Keeps Record Perfect

Jamal Sampson scored 22 points to lead Mater Dei to a 77-59 victory over Ocean View in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High School Friday.

Ocean View led, 17-15, after the first quarter, but the top-ranked Monarchs (5-0) went on a 26-3 run in the second.

Marques Crane had 22 points and Jeremiah Bell had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Ocean View (4-1).

In the Bob Osborne tournament:

Marina 71, Orange Lutheran 69--Dustin Kaatz scored 20 points and Beau Brown scored 18 to lead Marina (5-0).

Jason Whieldon scored 20 of his 41 points during Orange Lutheran’s 27-15 fourth-quarter rally.

Mission Viejo 50, Laguna Hills 47--Junior Matt Cole scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and was seven-for-seven from the free-throw line to lead visiting Mission Viejo (3-3).

Sophomore Travis Niesen and junior Mykel Valentine scored 12 points each for the Diablos, who next face Marina in the championship game today at 4:30.

Santa Ana 63, Foothill 57--Rick Montelongo had 10 rebounds and 21 points and Darnell Graham had 22 points for Santa Ana. Cesar Aceves had six steals for the Saints, who play Sonora today at 1:30 p.m. at Foothill.

In the Cerritos Valley Christian tournament:

Rancho Alamitos 58, Brentwood 57--Cuby Vantich (24 points) made a three-point shot with six seconds left to give Rancho Alamitos a 58-57 lead.

Vantich had four three-pointers and Bryan Maxwell had 16 points for the Vaqueros (3-4), who outscored Brentwood, 23-14, in the fourth quarter.

In the Gary Raya Classic:

Fountain Valley 67, Pomona Diamond Ranch 50--Brendan Cotter scored 24 points, including four three-pointers, to lead Fountain Valley (4-1). Salman Syed chipped in with 20 points for the Barons, who next play El Dorado in the third-place game today at 4:30.

In the Glendora tournament:

Brea Olinda 84, Covina 69--Ryan Moore had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Landon Lewis had 16 points and was eight-for-eight from the free-throw line. Brea Olinda improves to 2-2.

In the La Quinta tournament:

Calvary Chapel 67, La Quinta 66--Tyler Ohanian hit two free throws in the last four seconds to give Calvary Chapel a 67-64 lead in the third-round game. La Quinta’s Daniel Chan ended the game’s scoring, hitting a jumper in the last second.

Torin Beeler had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Tony Olivas had 13 points. Calvary Chapel is 5-2.

In nonleague games:

No. 10 Woodbridge 77, University 54--The Warriors jumped out to a 42-20 halftime lead. Danny Lambert had 11 of his 17 points during Woodbridge’s 29-10 first-quarter rally. The Warriors improve to 4-2. University is 3-2.

Capistrano Valley 82, Esperanza 74--Capistrano Valley’s Jake Franzen scored 23 points and the Cougers made 30 of 36 free throws. Esperanza’s Doug Brown hit six three-pointers and finished with 20 points.

Costa Mesa 82, Westminster 46--Mike Payne had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Rick Hatsushi had 11 points and eight assists for visiting Costa Mesa, which improves to 4-2. Westminster is 0-1.

Dana Hills 41, No. 4 Santa Margarita 34--Tom Newidouski had 12 points to lead the Dolphins (2-4), who outscored visiting Santa Margarita, 14-7, in the fourth quarter. The Eagles are 3-2.

Heritage Christian 114, Los Pinos 57--Matt Winter scored 34 points and Jason Grier added 27 to lead Heritage Christian (3-3) to the victory. The 114 points was a school record.

Laguna Beach 53, La Habra 52--Austin Butters made a layup and was fouled with five seconds left, and then hit the free throw to provide the margin of victory for Laguna Beach (3-3).

Travis Hanour had 34 points to lead the Artists.

San Clemente 80, Tustin 41--San Clemente jumped out to 23-6 first-quarter lead and cruised to the victory. Effrain Martinez led the Tritons with 13 points. James Hartman and Curtis Bush added 12 points each.

Sunny Hills 51, Garden Grove 33--Tony Gonzalez scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds to lead visiting Sunny Hills (2-4). Garden Grove is 0-2.
