Chelsy Thompson-Kady Pooler

Dana Hills,

Junior-Freshman

Thompson and Pooler were two big reasons why Dana Hills was a surprise semifinalist in the Southern Section Division I playoffs. In singles play, Thompson went 43-17 and had victories over Capistrano Valley’s Jenny Bailey and Carolyn Mitchell. Pooler, only 13 years old, was 45-10 and had impressive victories over Bailey, Mitchell and Palos Verdes Peninsula’s Colby Comstock. Although they had never played together before, Thompson and Pooler teamed up to win the South Coast League doubles championship, beating Leigh Ann Merryman and Bailey, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1, in the finals. They were a point away from reaching the section individual doubles finals before losing to Woodbridge’s Adriana Hockicko and Evangalina Soriano, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Thompson, also a first-team all-county pick last year, reached the section quarterfinals last season with Brooke Calton.

Kristen Case-Jenny Meyer

Newport Harbor,

Senior-Senior

Case and Meyer didn’t find each other until midway through the season, but they clicked immediately and never lost in 33 dual-match sets. They were at their best in the Southern Section Division I team finals, where they swept Palos Verdes Peninsula’s feared doubles teams and almost led the Sailors to an upset victory. In the section individual tournament, Case and Meyer breezed into the semifinals without dropping a set. They were beaten in the semifinals by the eventual champions, Sandra and Carla Rocha of Claremont, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Case, a section individual doubles finalist last year with Audra Adams, is a repeat first-team all-county selection. A four-year All-Sea View League performer, Case was also 19-5 in singles this season. Meyer, who transferred from Corona del Mar after her sophomore year, finished her career at Newport Harbor with a doubles record of 65-10 and a singles mark of 14-1.

Adriana Hockicko-Evangalina Soriano

Woodbridge,

Senior-Sophomore

Hockicko came within a set of becoming only the third girls’ player in Southern Section history to win back-to-back doubles championships. Last year, Hockicko won the title with Danielle Hustedt. This year, she advanced to the final with Soriano. Hockicko and Soriano won the Sea View League doubles tournament, beating Newport Harbor’s Jenny Meyer and Kristen Case in the final. They advanced to the section final by saving two match points against Dana Hills’ Chelsy Thompson and Kady Pooler in the semifinals. In the final, they were defeated by Claremont’s Sandra and Carla Rocha, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. During team play, Hockicko was 47-7 in singles and 12-3 in doubles. Soriano went 38-10 in doubles and 15-0 in singles.
