SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The seven men arrested this week on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old La Habra woman were released Tuesday for lack of evidence against them, officials said.

“There’s just a lot of conflict in the evidence we have gathered so far that doesn’t give you a clear picture of the events,” he said.

said Capt. John Rees of the La Habra Police Department.

Officers responded early Sunday to a report of an assault on West Mountain View Avenue, where a woman told police she had been kidnapped, raped and held against her will.

Police arrested six men later that day and a seventh Monday. The Orange County District Attorney’s office decided not to press charges against them now, officials said Tuesday, and the men were released.

La Habra Police Chief Dennis Kies said his department is still investigating the matter.

“When these kinds of crimes occur, we investigate them very diligently,” he said.
