Trotter Works Overtime to Lead Brea Olinda to Victory

Chelsea Trotter scored six points in overtime to lead Brea Olinda to a 53-48 victory over Shelbyville (Tenn.) Central in the first round of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions girls’ basketball tournament Friday at the Santa Barbara Events Center.

Trotter had 18 points to lead the Ladycats, who are playing in the Championship Division.

Abi Ramsey made two free throws for Shelbyville Central to send game into overtime.

In another Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions games:

Phoenix Mountain Pointe 71, No. 3 Troy 51--Nicole Powell, a 6-foot-2 guard who has committed to Stanford, scored 22 points for Mountain Pointe (13-0), ranked 17th in the nation by USA Today, in a first-round game of the Open Division.

Veronica Johns-Richardson had 16 points, six assists and seven steals for Troy (5-2).

Orem (Utah) 62, No. 2 Mater Dei 59--Maile Shimoda had 24 points, six assists and made nine free throws out of 10 attempts for the Monarchs (6-1). Mater Dei will play Santa Barbara at 2 today in the consolation round.

In the San Clemente tournament:

No. 6 El Toro 55, Huntington Beach 50--Giuliana Mendiola had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Chargers (4-1), who play Murrieta Valley today at 4:30 in pool play. Huntington Beach (3-2) plays Laguna Hills today at 3 p.m. in pool play.

Laguna Hills 58, Murrieta Valley 49--Megan Aaker scored 24 points and Shannon Owens had 15 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and five steals for Laguna Hills (6-2).

In the Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament:

Long Beach Cabrillo 53, Sunny Hills 51--Cabrillo escaped after Sunny Hills guard Kim Mackeand’s last second three-point attempt fell short. Mackeand led Sunny Hills (2-7) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

At the Kona Classic tournament in Hawaii:

San Diego Eastlake 58, Marina 48--Nikki Lee scored 20 points for Marina (4-3).

In the La Quinta tournament:

University 47, Savanna 38--Reagan Anders had 15 points and 19 rebounds and April Atiba had eight points and 15 rebounds to lead University (4-5) to a third-place finish. Reanita Starr had 16 points for Savanna (5-4).

Santiago 53, Compton Centennial 21--Santiago (6-4) outscored Compton Centennial 48-17 over the last three quarters to take the consolation game.

Whittier California 55, La Quinta 29--Hien Duong, Lacee Keller and Jackie Nguyen each had eight points for La Quinta, which placed sixth in the tournament. The Aztecs trailed by only one point after the first quarter, but California went on a 18-4 run in the second quarter to pull away. Alicia Hamilton had 11 points for California (4-5).

In the Norco tournament:

Hemet West Valley 47, Canyon 44--Trish Christian had 14 points, 10 steals and seven assists for Canyon (4-5), which went on a 16-8 run in the fourth quarter. The Comanches placed fourth in the tournament. Katie Nichol had 25 points to lead West Valley.

In the Mission Viejo tournament:

Corona del Mar 61, Rancho Alamitos 16--Jackie McCoy had 16 points and Kristen McCoy had 10 rebounds for Corona del Mar (5-3), which went on a 12-0 run to start the game.

In nonleague games:

Brethren Christian 45, St. Mary’s 44--Junior forward Jesiree Dizon scored 14 points and added nine rebounds for Brethren Christian (7-3).

Capistrano Valley Christian 54, Maranatha 52--Bethany Thom made four key free throws down the stretch to help Capistrano Valley Christian (4-2) hold off Marantha.
