Times’ All-Sports Award

Share

The fall sports season has concluded and the points have been totaled toward the seventh Times’ Orange County All-Sports Award, given at the end of the school year to the large- and small-school division winners.

Newport Harbor has a commanding lead among large schools (enrollment of 2,000 and above) and its cross-town rival Corona del Mar is well ahead in the small-schools division.

The All-Sports Award recognizes schools that have the county’s most successful athletic programs. The Times’ scoring system awards points only for a team’s Southern Section playoff participation and finish. Thus, field hockey programs can’t earn points because they do not have section-sanctioned playoffs. State playoffs are not taken into consideration.

Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs. In cross-country and golf, 20 points are awarded for a first-place finish, 16 for second, 12 for third and fourth, eight for fifth through eighth and four for qualifying.
