Fire Disrupts East Coast Trains

NEW YORK — A fire in a communications shed forced the evacuation of Penn Station on Sunday, halting service on Amtrak and suburban commuter railroads as well as stranding passengers along the East Coast.
The two-alarm fire was reported at 3:17 p.m. and was under control just after 5 p.m., said Firefighter Mike Pendergast, a department spokesman. The station reopened at 7:20 p.m., police said.
The fire occurred in an Amtrak communications signal shed at track 18, said Tom Kelly, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
There were no reported injuries, but service was suspended for hours on Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit, stranding travelers on the busy weekend before Christmas.
