Brea Olinda Runs Over Servite

Brea Olinda guard Derrick Martin, all 5 feet 7 inches, 140 pounds of him, backpedaled and ducked when he saw Martin Iti, a 6-11 center for Servite trucking toward him late in their game Monday night.

The two collided, the ball didn’t go in the basket and the diminutive Martin was called for the foul.

He picked himself off the Servite gym floor, then laughed.

He laughed because he was in the game. Martin, a reserve, only plays in routs. And Brea did the squashing on the scoreboard, 82-69.

Ryan Wilber had 22 points and six rebounds to pace the high-powered Brea offense. Ryan Moore added 15 points and Landon Lewis had 14 for the Wildcats, who did most of their running forward.

Brea (6-4), ranked No. 10 in the county, employed an aggressive fast-break offense to wear down the Friars (7-4).

“We had good composure,” Brea Coach Bob Terry said. “We made good decisions and we played well as a team.”

It would have been easy to lose composure in a tightly called game, which referees seemed to whistle even the slightest hand check.

Brea adjusted and took charge with a 13-6 run and took a 21-10 lead after one first quarter.

Helped by a pair of Iti dunks on consecutive possessions, Servite pulled to within six at 30-24, on a pair of Ryan Gurzi free throws with 2:42 left in the first half. But that was as close as the Friars got.

Brea closed the half with a couple of three-point baskets and a couple of fastbreak baskets, the story of the game according to Friar Coach Brian Kenney.

“Their break killed us,” Kenney said. “That and their shooters. They have good shooters and they came to play tonight. We were a little flat.”

Asked for a reason for the sluggish play, Kenney could only guess.

“I’m going to have to look into that,” he said.

Terry said his team was looking to avenge a sub-par performance in the Anaheim Holiday tournament last week. The Wildcats lost twice there.

“We wanted to make a statement,” Terry said. “We’re 6-4 and people are wondering about us, but we’ve played some pretty tough teams.”

Two of Brea’s losses are to teams that made Southern Section finals last season.

In other nonleague games:

No. 5 Marina 81, Westminster 52--Dustin Kaatz scored 22 points for host Marina (9-2), and teammate Ryan Redman added 11 points and 10 assists. Andy Walton scored 16 for Westminster (2-5).

Bolsa Grande 67, Long Beach Millikan 65--Jon James hit two free throws with four seconds left to lift Bolsa Grande (5-4) to victory. James finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds and Willie Montgomery added 20 points. The Matador’s Omar Amaral scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

Corona del Mar 52, Saddleback 35--Kevin Hansen scored 27 points for Corona del Mar (8-3), which went on a 22-6 run in the second quarter.

La Habra 71, Calvary Chapel 61--La Habra’s Jason Smallwood had a team-high 21 points, including five three-pointers.

Josh Sherman had 21 points to lead Calvary Chapel (6-4). La Habra improves to 6-5.

Whittier Christian 66, Whitney 39--Mike Lufti and Kevin Harris scored 12 points each for Whittier Christian (4-7). The Heralds held Whitney scoreless in the first quarter.

In the Bullhead City (Az.) Tournament:

No. 7 El Toro 53, Century 32--Guard Ken Tanaka started in his second game back after recovering from knee surgery. He led a smothering press that put the first-round game away early. Wes DeCoite added 14 points. The Chargers (7-4) play Rangeview, Colo. today. Century is 6-2.

In the Downey Calvary Chapel tournament:

Los Angeles Price Christian 80, Brethren Christian 52--Ivan Samuels scored 15 points and Mike Oparah had 14 for Brethren Christian (6-3). Price Christian (9-1) went on a 23-7 run to start the game. Brethren Christian plays St. John Bosco at 5 today in pool play.

In the Lahainaluna (Hawaii) tournament:

Fullerton 50, Waiakea (Hawaii) 28--Akachi Azubuike scored 14 points and Puhk-Maan Sidhu scored 10, including two three-pointers, to lead Fullerton (8-1), which plays Newport (Washington) today in the second round.
