No. 2 Woodbridge Defeats San Clemente

Peter Berger scored in the 70th minute to give second-ranked Woodbridge a 2-1 victory over San Clemente in the quarterfinals of the Torrey Pines boys’ soccer tournament Monday.

Brad Hallack scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute for Woodbridge (7-1-1), but Kris Winrich’s goal in the 35th minute off a pass from Martin Pichette tied the score for San Clemente (5-3-1).

Woodbridge plays third-ranked Mater Dei in one semifinal at 9 a.m. today.

In other quarterfinal games:

No. 3 Mater Dei 4, Poway 1--Kevin Novak scored two goals to lead the Monarchs (12-2-1). Matt Fennell and Ruben Rosales (two assists) also scored for Mater Dei. Radamas Lafaurie made six saves and Nate Pena added four for Mater Dei.

Capistrano Valley 4, Torrey Pines 0--Jordan Harvey, Jared Moine, John Fincher and Robert Rathdurn scored for the Cougars (6-2-2).

Fincher and Robert Boyd each had an assist and Zach Mikelson made eight saves for his second shutout of the season.

In the Montclair tournament:

Valencia 3, Cathedral City 2--Eliezer Flores, Luis Perez and Jose Ventura scored for Valencia, which handed Cathedral City its first loss of the season. Perez assisted on two of the goals. Scott Mazurier had four saves for Valencia, which plays Rancho Cucamonga in the second round today.

In the Ocean View girls’ soccer tournament:

Cypress 3, Long Beach Wilson 0--Amber Haberman scored the first goal 22 minutes into the game for Cypress (6-3-2). Krissy Grana and Anna Ahle also scored for the Centurions.

In the Upland tournament:

Upland 1, No. 3 Mater Dei 0--Amy Raymond scored in the last 10 minutes of regulation in the championship game. Mater Dei’s Jessica Gattica, called up from the JV team, scored four goals for the tournament.

In an earlier pool-play game, Mater Dei defeated Western Christian, 5-0. Jessica Gattica had two goals for the Monarchs.
