Burroughs Takes Out Home Team, 75-60

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Art Sullivan is the first to admit his Burroughs High boys’s basketball team is a bit of a mystery to some people.

After all, the Indians haven’t exactly been a regional power in recent years.

But the Indians might have a difficult time remaining anonymous if they continue to play the way they did in a 75-60 victory Wednesday night over Westlake in pool play of the Westlake tournament.

“Nobody knows about us but I think we have a pretty good team,” Sullivan said. “But I’d prefer to be a stealth team and be a mystery.”

There was no mystery about how the Indians (8-4) defeated Westlake (9-4) to advance to the third-place game of the tournament.

They won behind an outstanding defensive effort and dominating inside play in the second half.

After trailing, 45-36, at halftime, the Indians closed their deficit to 57-56 by the end of the third quarter.

Tyler Newton of Burroughs, a 6-foot-9 senior, scored 13 of his 17 points in the quarter to help the Indians pull away.

Newton, who finished with 13 rebounds, dominated on the defensive end and helped his team outscored Westlake, 19-3, in the final quarter.

“It was the defense that did it,” Newton said. “At halftime, we were down and we wanted to play the best defense we could. We just stuck together and played as a team.”

Keith Jarbo of Burroughs had 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Justin Ambos added 18 points, including five three-point baskets.

Tyler Adamczyk of Westlake had 22 points but fouled out with 5:53 left.

The Warriors, who saw their seven-game winning streak end, missed all 12 shots they took in the fourth quarter.

Chatsworth 58, Crespi 53--Shayne Berry scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Chancellors to a come-from-behind victory.

Chatsworth (5-7) trailed, 42-38, entering the final quarter.

Crespi (7-5) plays Hueneme for the title at 8 tonight. Andrew Moore had 18 points for the Celts.

Hueneme 59, Birmingham 52--Frank Orocio scored all 18 of his points in the second half to spark the Vikings.

Orocio’s three-point basket with 1:03 remaining gave the Vikings a 57-52 lead.

Anthony Camper had 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Hueneme (8-4).

Aaron Burgin finished with 14 points and six rebounds for Birmingham (5-7).

Lynwood 88, Granada Hills 69--Ryan Hicks scored 29 points but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Highlanders in a pool-play game.
