Canyon Makes Most of Shot

Canyon High, dominated in the first half, scored two minutes into the second half and managed a 1-1 tie with Hart in a Foothill League girls’ soccer game Tuesday at Canyon.

The Cowboys (10-3-3, 4-1-3 in league play) were outshot, 6-0, in the first 40 minutes, but scored on their first shot, a 25-yard blast from the center of the field by Jasmine Cetrone.

Cetrone’s sixth goal, which came on a pass from Gentry Green, allowed Canyon to remain in a second-place tie with Valencia and four points behind Saugus, which defeated Burbank on Tuesday.

Hart, five-time defending league champion, held a 12-4 shot advantage in the game and hit the crossbar on Sara Dean’s shot in the 27th minute. But the Indians dropped to fourth place and are in danger of missing the Southern Section playoffs.

“I can’t complain with how we play because we play hard, but I’m not happy with the results,” said Coach Oliver Germond of Hart.

“We haven’t finished plays the whole season.”

Hart at times strung five and six passes together and kept the ball in Canyon territory for minutes at a time.

But the Cowboy defense was equal to the challenge.

“Our defense is built on the bend-but-don’t-break concept,” said Coach Gregg Cohen of Canyon. “We don’t chase the ball around and we wait for a soft touch or a turnover and capitalize on those for [counter-attacks].”

Hart, which advanced to the Division I final in 1997 and the semifinals last season, scored two minutes before halftime. Becca Gould took a pass from Dean at the top of the penalty area and beat goalkeeper Marisa Reidy-Cochran with a low shot inside the left post.

Germond was left to ponder his team’s chances with games against Burroughs, Valencia and Saugus remaining.

“Hopefully our run isn’t over,” he said. “We were hoping to win our last four games and win the league, but now we probably need some help.”
