Edison Beats Fountain Valley to Win Sunset League Title

Fourth-ranked Edison clinched its first outright Sunset League girls’ basketball title since 1987 with a 70-55 victory over host Fountain Valley on Tuesday.

Michelle Zylstra scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for Edison (21-5, 9-0) whose only other title this decade was shared with Marina and Fountain Valley in 1996.

Lindsay King scored 17 points for the Barons (7-18, 2-7).

In other Sunset League games:

No. 6 Marina 64, Esperanza 45--Chanda McLeod scored 14 points to lead Marina (22-3, 7-2) past Esperanza (15-9, 5-4). Nikki Lee picked up 13 points and Leanne Lambert had 11 for the Vikings.

Huntington Beach 57, Los Alamitos 43--Kelsey Ball scored 19 points and Melanie Cherney and Megan Masuda each had five assists for Huntington Beach (17-9, 4-5).

In the Century League:

No. 8 Foothill 62, Santa Ana Valley 32--Chavaughn Brown scored 15 of her 19 points in the first half as Foothill (22-3, 9-0) clinched its 14th league title since 1977.

In the Empire League:

Century 49, Loara 23--Adriana Mendez scored 10 of her 16 points in the first half and Aprile Powell had 18 rebounds and six blocks for Century (21-4, 9-0), which clinched the league title.

In the Orange League:

No. 1 Brea Olinda 121, Western 29--Chelsea Trotter had 10 rebounds, six assists and eight steals and Lindsey Davidson had 23 points and five assists as Brea (24-3, 9-0) clinched its 14th straight league title. The Ladycats went on a 35-5 run in the first quarter and took a 72-11 lead at the half.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 67, Ontario Christian 34--Cathy Joens scored 24 points and Marcene Guerrero had 17 as Calvary Chapel (20-5, 11-0) clinched its first outright league title in school history.

Cerritos Valley Christian 39, Brethren Christian 35--Sarah Muilenburg had 19 points, five rebounds and four steals for host Brethren Christian (14-14, 4-8). Valley Christian (14-9, 9-2) made four free throws in the final minutes to take the lead for good.

In the Sea View League:

No 2 El Toro 68, Woodbridge 51--Giuliana Mendiola scored 34 points to lead El Toro, which closed the game with a 22-9 run. Bryn Riley scored 15 points for Woodbridge (15-10, 5-4).

Irvine 75, Corona del Mar 44--Jody Carlson scored 17 points and Natalie Kamada added 13 for Irvine (16-9, 5-4).

Santa Margarita 68, Newport Harbor 47--Venessa Ferragamo scored 13 of her 26 points in the first quarter to help Santa Margarita to a 25-14 lead. Daniell Bennett scored 14 points for the host Eagles (16-9, 6-3).

In the South Coast League:

No. 5 Mater Dei 42, Dana Hills 24--Kristian Kirkpatrick had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Mater Dei. Maile Shimoda had nine points, including two three-pointers in the fourth quarter, and Lindsay Pavlik also scored nine for the Monarchs (18-5, 8-1).
