SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Carlos Coronado scored eight points in overtime and Burroughs High overcame a sluggish second-half to defeat Canyon, 67-59, in a Foothill League boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night.

The Indians (15-9, 7-2 in league play) squandered a 38-30 halftime lead but moved a step closer to claiming the Foothill title for the first time since winning consecutive championships in 1989 and 1990.

Burroughs remained tied for the league lead with Valencia and moved two games ahead of Canyon (12-11, 5-4). Burroughs concludes league play against Burbank on Friday.

The Indians blew several chances during the final minutes of regulation.

Kevin Krose of Burroughs made the front end of a one-and-one to tie the score, 52-52, with 26 seconds left but missed the second shot and the game went to overtime.

“We missed a lot of free throws,” Coach Art Sullivan of Burroughs said. “We would make the first one but we never made the second one. That’s been a problem for us all season.”

Canyon provided a strong test with a combination of torrid three-point shooting and strong play under the basket.

Coronado, who scored 18 points and kept Burroughs in the game, scored two quick baskets at the start of overtime to put the Indians ahead, 58-54.

Anthony Falasca scored 19 points for the Cowboys, including two three-point baskets in the final minutes of regulation.

When Burroughs adjusted defensively to contain Falasca, Canyon countered with Jacyn Ezell’s scrappy play under the boards.

Ezell, who took control of the game in the third and fourth quarters, finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Krose finished with 18 points, but 14 came in the first half when Burroughs controlled the game.

He could not find the range in the second half. He missed poorly from the field, including an air-ball on a three-point shot that produced jeers from Canyon’s fans the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, Falasca and reserve Matt Nelson were making three-point shots from NBA distance for Canyon.

Nelson made three of five three-point shots, finishing with nine points.

“This is a tough league, not because everybody is bad,” Sullivan said.

“Every team has some good players. Those Canyon guys can shoot the lights out.”
