CSUN’s DeBiase Named NCAA Player of Week

Senior right-hander Jim DeBiase of Cal State Northridge was selected NCAA Division I baseball player of the week for independent schools after going 2-0 in seven innings of three-hit ball in games against Southern Utah last week. He did not allow a run, struck out six and walked three.

Northridge shortstop J.T. Stotts, a freshman from Hart High, was chosen rookie of the week for independent schools after batting .474 (nine of 19) and driving in three runs.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Cal State Northridge women are 11th in the U.S. Track and Field Coaches’ Assn. power rankings for indoor track.

Northridge is 30th in the men’s rankings.

GOLF

Jonathan Feuerhelm, a 15-year-old freshman at Alemany High, shot a five-over-par 79 at Los Cerranos in Chino Hills during a qualifying tournament Friday for next week’s Nissan Open. He failed to qualify but was one of the youngest participants.

SOCCER

Goalkeeper Lauren Stevenson of Crescenta Valley High has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next season.

Stevenson tied a Crescenta Valley record with 15 shutouts during the 1996-97 season.

A President’s Day camp is set for Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lupin Hill Elementary School in Calabasas. The camp for boys and girls, ages 6-15, costs $40 and benefits Agoura Pony Baseball. Information: (818) 774-0099.

The Valley United youth soccer club will hold open tryouts for players Feb. 27-28 and March 6-7 at Reseda High.
