Gibson, Kunau Named to Coach All-Star Game

Woodbridge’s Rick Gibson and Orange Lutheran’s Jim Kunau will be the coaches for the 40th Orange County North/South Prep All-Star Football Game this summer, game coordinator Phil Anton announced Tuesday.

Gibson, the South coach, led Woodbridge to a 13-0-1 record and the Southern Section Division VI championship last season. The accomplishment is more impressive considering the Warriors and Gibson had endured a 26-game winless streak that ended in 1997. Gibson has a 58-47-7 record in 10 seasons at Woodbridge.

Kunau, the North coach, led Orange Lutheran to the Olympic League title last season and the quarterfinals of the Division XI playoffs. He has a 55-19-1 record in six seasons with the Lancers. Under Kunau, the Lancers have reached the section title game twice and the semifinals four times.

The game is July 9 at Orange Coast College.

Costa Mesa High boys’ and girls’ cross-country Coach Joe Busi has resigned after five years with the Mustang program, the school announced. Busi, a walk-on coach, led the girls’ team to the 1997 state Division IV title.

Atletico Morelia, one of Mexico’s top first division soccer teams, will play the Zodiac at 8 tonight at Santa Ana Stadium.

This will be the first game of the Zodiac’s exhibition season. The team opened training camp on Feb. 1. Proceeds from the game will be used to improve soccer fields in Santa Ana.

The Galaxy has scheduled an exhibition game Feb. 24 at Santa Ana Stadium against Aguila of El Salvador’s first division.

The Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club of Newport Beach will host a Harbor 20 sailboat regatta Saturday. The Harbor 20 is a small, open-cockpit boat. Up to 20 will compete in a series of four races. For more information, call (949) 644-9530.
