Sanchez, Rider Double Up for Cal Lutheran

Nicole Sanchez scored 22 points and Missy Rider had 15 to lead Cal Lutheran over Occidental, 81-55, in a SCIAC women’s basketball game Friday night at Occidental.

The victory kept the Regals (20-3) in a first-place tie in the conference at 9-1.

Cal Lutheran put away the game with a 20-4 run to start the second half. The Regals led, 36-32, at halftime.

Anna Celaya, formerly of North Hollywood High, scored 24 points for Occidental (4-18, 2-9).

In another women’s basketball game:

The Master’s 74, UC San Diego 63--Molly Scott, who scored 16 points, was among four Master’s players scoring in double figures in a nonconference game at UC San Diego.

Corinne Wiseman and Reesie Gorman each had 15 points and Elizabeth Hansell had 13 for Master’s (26-4).

BASEBALL

Washington 10, Cal State Northridge 1--The host Matadors (8-9) struck out 11 times and managed only three singles in a nonconference loss.

Jason Watkins’ run-scoring single in the ninth inning averted the shutout.

The Master’s 16, British Columbia 5--Rob Avila drove in six runs with four hits, including two home runs and a double, for the host Mustangs in a nonconference game called after eight innings because of darkness.

Mike Wertz drove in three runs for Master’s with a single and a home run. Josh Carrington (4-0) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks in five innings.

Cal Lutheran 4, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2--Jeremy Schlosser doubled in Ryan Yoshiwara and scored on Brian Malchow’s flyout in the 10th inning to lift the Kingsmen (5-0, 4-0) in a SCIAC game at Claremont (3-1, 3-1).

Tom Canale (3-0) pitched 9 1/3 innings and Jarod Hoagland earned his first save by retiring the final two batters.

Pierce 7, Mt. San Antonio 6--Brian Menkins’ bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in the winning run in a Mt. San Antonio tournament game.

In an earlier game, Pierce (5-4) defeated Barstow, 13-3.

Pierce’s Traviss Hodge was seven-for-seven in the two games, including three triples.

Moorpark 10, Rio Hondo 9--Nate Frost’s hit in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Moorpark in a Mt. San Antonio tournament game.

Josh Goldfield had three runs batted in and three hits, including a double and a home run for Moorpark (8-3).

Harbor 16, Valley 8--Nick Lombard had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs for Valley (4-6) in a Stengel tournament game.

Paul Ramirez had three hits for Valley.

Cypress 17, Canyons 4--Skip Adams drove in three runs with two hits, including a home run, for Cypress (7-1) in a Cypress tournament game.

Chris Coash had two hits for Canyons (3-6), driving in one run and scoring twice.

Ventura 5, Citrus 2--Matt Cresco drove in two runs in the bottom of the second inning for host Ventura in a nonconference game.

Aaron Dixon also drove in a run in the second for the Pirates (6-3).

David Arroyo (1-1) gave up one earned run, walked two and struck out six in 7 2/3 innings.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 10, El Camino 3--Tommie Payan had a three-run double for Moorpark (9-2) in a nonconference game at El Camino.

Antelope Valley 4, Santa Barbara City 3--Amber Slanton’s bases-loaded single in the eight inning scored the winning.

Antelope Valley improved to 5-3, Santa Barbara dropped to 3-2.
