Hidalgo Lifts Crescenta Valley in Overtime

Rebecca Hidalgo scored a goal in the second 10-minute overtime Friday to give Crescenta Valley High a 2-1 victory over host Santa Monica in a first-round game of the Southern Section Division I girls’ soccer playoffs.

It was Hidalgo’s second goal of the game, raising her season total to 23.

Julie Herrold, who also has 23 goals, assisted on both goals for Crescenta Valley (16-6-2).

In other first-round games:

Quartz Hill 2, Long Beach Millikan 1--Sophomore Kellie Cox scored twice during a six-minute span early in the second half to help the fourth-seeded Rebels rally from a 1-0 deficit in a Division I game at Quartz Hill.

Julie Gold assisted on the game-winner in the 50th minute for Quartz Hill (16-4-3), which won its 11th consecutive game.

Westlake 2, Santa Barbara 1--Naomi Chu scored off an assist from Tasha Spangler and the top-seeded Warriors (18-1-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to escape at Westlake in a Division I game.

Buena 5, Lancaster 0--Natalie Sanderson scored three goals in a Division II game at Buena. The Bulldogs (21-2-2) led at halftime, 1-0, on Sanderson’s first goal, which came in the 36th minute. Her next two goals came in the 54th and 64th minutes.

Simi Valley 5, Rio Mesa 0--Cindy Mallett and Valorie Annunziata each scored twice and Mindy Gondrez had three assists in a Division II game for the host Pioneers (18-7-1), who have won seven in a row.

Mallett scored twice on head shots off of throw-ins by Michelle Thuotte. Gondrez assisted on both goals by Annunziata.

Hart 2, Cerritos 0--Katie McKeon scored the first goal in the 10th minute on a rebound off of a defender in a Division II game at Hart.

Ali Pavoni scored in the second half for Hart (18-5-3).

Chaminade 8, South Hills 0--Kim Taylor scored two of her three goals in the first 10 minutes in a Division IV game at Chaminade (19-4-2).
