Falkinstein’s Overtime Goal Makes El Camino Real’s Day

Perseverance finally paid off for the El Camino Real High boys’ soccer team Thursday.

Yan Falkinstein’s goal in the 108th minute, during the second sudden-death overtime, gave the Conquistadores a 1-0 victory over Chatsworth in a City Section second-round playoff game at El Camino Real.

After Jose Rivera-Otero attempted to head in a Jason Burbidge pass, the ball deflected off of a Chatsworth defender to Falkinstein, who sent a three-yard shot into the left side of the goal.

El Camino Real improved to 18-4-2.

In Southern Section playoff games:

Woodbridge 2, Rio Mesa 0--Goalkeeper Doug Allan made four saves to record his 65th career shutout and 18th of the season for host Woodbridge (23-1-2) in a Division II quarterfinal at Alton Park in Irvine.

Alfredo Lira played the first 75 minutes in goal for Rio Mesa (19-4-5), making two saves.

Estevan Mendoza made one save while holding Woodbridge scoreless in the final five minutes of the tightly contested game.

Mark Oehlman and Jason Macrae scored for Woodbridge.

Santa Ynez 2, La Canada 1--Lonnie Dietz’s first-half goal gave host La Canada a 1-0 lead, but it didn’t hold up in a Division IV quarterfinal.

Dietz scored in the 10th minute, taking a pass from Eric Henderson and outrunning the defense to score on a chip shot for La Canada (14-6-5).

Santa Ynez, which was limited to four shots, scored both of its goals on penalty kicks.

The first penalty was a hand ball in the 30th minute that Sam Castillo converted. The second penalty, on a disputed call, came in the 65th minute and was converted by Carlos Corona.

Santa Ynez improved to 14-6-1.

San Marino 4, St. Francis 1--Miguel Alvarez scored twice for the third-seeded Titans (20-4-2), including the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute of a Division IV quarterfinal at San Marino that was close until the final minutes.

Daniel Marco scored for St. Francis (17-6-5).

Carpinteria 0, Flintridge Prep 0--Host Carpinteria won a shootout, 4-2, to advance to the Division V semifinals.

Mike Mellow and Drew Picone converted penalty kicks for Flintridge Prep (16-3-4).
