With Lang in Reserve, Valley Beats Trade Tech on Late Run

Felix Lang scored all of his 17 points in the second half and sparked a run that carried the Valley College men’s basketball team to a 72-58 victory over L.A. Trade Tech in a Southern California Regional first-round game Friday night at Valley.

Lang, a freshman guard, came off the bench to score 10 points during a 17-6 run that broke a 41-41 tie. For the game, Lang made four of six shots and nine of 10 free throws.

Valley (20-13) extended a 30-25 halftime lead when when Tyree Williams hit a quick three-point basket.

But L.A. Trade Tech (17-12) used a full-court press to force several turnovers and rallied to tie the score, 41-41.

George Walker contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds for Valley.

In other first-round men’s regional games:

Canyons 82, Cuesta 76--Charles Madison scored 18 of his career-best 25 points in the first half, shooting 12 of 18 for game, to lead Canyons (19-14) at Cuesta.

Cuesta (22-13), which trailed by 10 at halftime, pulled to within 51-50. But Canyons held on with the help of four free throws by Anthony Ellison in the final two minutes.

Antelope Valley 110, Chaffey 68--Dameion Henry had 23 points to lead the Marauders at Antelope Valley. Le’Tre Kelly added 16 points for Antelope Valley.

BASEBALL

Merced 10, Canyons 4--Sergio Franco had two hits, including a double, for host Canyons (5-10) in a nonconference game.

Merced (5-9) scored six unearned runs on six errors.

Cal Lutheran 32, Caltech 2--Jeremy Schlosser had a grand slam and a double for the host Kingsmen (7-3, 6-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Nick Lawson had a three-run home run and a run-scoring single, and Joe King contributed a three-run triple and a run-scoring single for Cal Lutheran.

Kevin Bradley hit a home run for Caltech (2-4, 0-4).

The Master’s 11, Biola 4--Preston Sprinkle hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Master’s in a nonconference game at Biola.

Starter Josh Higgins (2-1) struck out seven in five innings and reliever Mike Ploharz picked up his second save.
