Tibbetts Converts Key Shots for Crespi

Blake Tibbetts scored 23 points and Crespi High defeated Harvard-Westlake, 88-81, in a Mission League boys’ basketball game on Wednesday night at Crespi.

Tibbetts converted two three-point plays to help the Celts (10-3, 1-0 in league play), ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times, break a 70-70 tie with four minutes left.

Russell Lakey scored 25 points for Harvard-Westlake (8-8, 1-1) before fouling out with three minutes to play.

In other boys’ games:

Alemany 74, Notre Dame 59--After posting a 1-23 record in Mission League play the last two seasons, Alemany (8-4, 1-0) continued its turnabout in the league opener.

A relentless pressure defense and Devin Montgomery’s 22 points keyed the victory.

Notre Dame (6-9, 0-1) was led by Chris Williams, who scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

Alemany led by as many as 18 points in the first half.

Chatsworth 75, Canoga Park 63--Ronald Ruffin, Richard Harrison and Mark Cannon each scored 17 points for Chatsworth (8-3) in a nonconference game at Canoga Park (3-10).

Harrison had 14 rebounds and Ruffin grabbed nine. Cannon had 13 assists. The Chancellors are ranked No. 8 in the region.

Mike Gomes had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Canoga Park

Grant 78, Birmingham 62--Gilbert Arenas scored 30 points and Daniel Tarr had 16 for host Grant (11-3), ranked No. 8 in the region, in a nonconference game.

Kennedy 77, El Camino Real 60--Nana Gbewonyo scored 25 points for Kennedy (8-5) in the fifth-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.

Justin Saad-Anthony had 18 points for El Camino Real (6-7), and teammates Brandon Robertson and Lyndell Anderson each scored 15.

Van Nuys 68, Sherman Oaks CES 34--Abe Morabbi scored 40 points and Rocky Daniels had 13 for the Wolves (4-8) in the seventh-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.

Sinclair Brown scored 14 pointsfor the Knights (3-7).

Verdugo Hills 69, Reseda 50--Michael Elliott scored eight fourth-quarter points for Verdugo Hills in the third-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.

Elliott finished with 22 points and had 12 rebounds for Verdugo Hills (4-9).

Agoura 54, Westlake 51--Garrett Lepisto scored 19 points and Agoura withstood a fourth-quarter rally in a Marmonte League opener at Westlake.

Agoura (7-6) led, 48-31, with 6:00 left, but Westlake went on an 18-3 run.

Westlake (7-8) trailed, 51-49, and had possession with 18 seconds left, but committed a turnover.

Moorpark 67, Thousand Oaks 57--Todd Tomlinson scored 23 points for host Moorpark, which was playing in its first Marmonte League game.

Moorpark (10-4), which finished second in the Frontier league last season, got 17 points and five assists from Shawn Corkery.

Bell-Jeff 95, St. Genevieve 49--Mike Yildiz scored 30 points for Bell-Jeff (8-7, 1-0) in a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff.

Oak Park 65, Calabasas 63--Scott Jones forced a backcourt violation with 11 seconds remaining and Oak Park held on in a nonleague game at Oak Park.

Zach Smith had 17 points for Oak Park (5-9) and Spencer Hariton scored 22 for Calabasas (7-7).

Nordhoff 49, St Bonavenure 42--Andy Flores scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half for Nordhoff (11-2) in a nonleague game at St. Bonaventure.

Ventura 64, Channel Islands 61--Jeff Staniland scored seven of Ventura’s nine points in overtime and finished with 30 --in a non-league game at Channel Islands.

Ventura trailed, 34-18, at halftime but rallied with a 19-8 run in the fourth quarter.

Dwight Sattiewhite led Channel Islands with 27 points.

GIRLS’ GAMES

Moorpark 56, Thousand Oaks 44--Damaris Hinojosa scored 23 of her game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter for Moorpark (13-1, 2-1) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Hinojosa had 11 rebounds and seven steals. Moorpark is ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times.

Simi Valley 52, Newbury Park 47--Annmarie Turpin scored 18 points for No. 5-ranked Simi Valley (12-4, 1-1) in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Nordhoff 57, St. Bonaventure 49--Christen Roper had 22 points, 18 rebounds and nine blocked shots for host Nordhoff (4-12) in a nonleague game.

Stacey Howard scored 31 points for St. Bonaventure (7-7).
