Mar’s Free Throws, Wade’s 22 Points Lead El Dorado

Elaine Mar scored 11 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to help El Dorado defeat Cypress, 49-46, in an Empire League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Cypress.

Mar made seven of eight free throws in the final quarter for El Dorado (12-5, 1-0 in league), but Cypress (8-9, 0-1) still had a chance to tie. Remy Hitomi’s three-point attempt missed with eight seconds remaining and El Dorado escaped.

Carly Wade scored 22 points to lead El Dorado.

Lyndsay Weaver scored 16 points for Cypress, which rallied from an eight-point deficit after three quarters to take a one-point lead with one minute remaining.

In other Empire League games:

Century 70, Katella 29--Senior Aprile Powell scored 29 points and Adrianna Mendez added 15 points for the Centurions (12-3, 1-0).

Loara 38, Kennedy 32--Shawnna Walker had 17 points and eight rebounds and Vivi Mai scored 11 points for Loara (10-8, 1-0).

In the South Coast League:

No. 5 San Clemente 57, Dana Hills 17--Kimberly Noble scored 12 points and Colleen Turnbull had 10 for San Clemente (12-5, 2-0), which limited visiting Dana Hills to six field goals.

Mission Viejo 70, Trabuco Hills 32--Erin O’Donnell scored nine of her 21 points on three-pointers and Suzie Burrage had 19 points and 14 rebounds for visiting Mission Viejo (7-10, 1-1).

In the Golden West League:

No. 8 Westminster 81, Saddleback 31--Tara Moore scored 14 points and Erin Argunda had 13 for Westminster (14-3, 2-0).

Rosary 63, Ocean View 40--Maggie Barnett had 20 points and five assists and Jenise Karcher scored 17 and had six assists to lead visiting Rosary (12-6, 2-0). Romina Bollini scored six of her 15 points in Rosary’s 15-4 second-quarter run.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 85, Maranatha 49--Cathy Joens scored 23 points and Marcene Guerrero added 11 for visiting Calvary Chapel (11-5). Lauren Guzman scored 18 points for Maranatha.

Orange Lutheran 43, Brethren Christian 22--Junior Nicole Grady scored 23 points for Orange Lutheran (7-7, 1-1) to help defeat Brethren Christian (10-7, 1-1). Grady made nine of 11 free throws and had nine rebounds and nine steals.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 67, Laguna Beach 33--Erika Castro’s 27 points and 15 rebounds led Aliso Niguel (4-13, 1-0) on the road.

Costa Mesa 50, Estancia 34--Autumn Smith blocked 12 shots, Nancy Hatsushi had 10 assists and Evelyn Powers had 18 points and five steals to lead Costa Mesa (10-5, 1-0).

Laguna Hills 42, University 41--Host Laguna Hills (9-6) took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on. Shannon Owens had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Shiang-Eu Bai scored 14 points to lead University.

In a nonleague game:

Heritage Christian 27, Antelope Valley Christian 25--Luz Heridia had 23 rebounds and Ioana Lupas had 12 points for visiting Heritage Christian (3-5). Antelope Valley Christian is 2-4.
