Los Alamitos Scores Late Goal, Then Wins in Overtime

Los Alamitos, ranked third in the county, scored the tying goal with two minutes remaining in regulation before Nikki Szlak scored in the second half of overtime to give the Griffins a 2-1 victory over 10th-ranked Esperanza in a Sunset League girls’ soccer game Thursday at Esperanza.

Szlak scored the winning goal on a free kick in the 99th minute. Los Alamitos (12-1-2, 1-0 in league) reached the extra period after Susan Palmer scored off a corner kick by Monique Gillaspie.

Erin Winter scored in the 12th minute for Esperanza (6-4-6, 0-1).

In other Sunset League games:

No. 6 Huntington Beach 1, Fountain Valley 1 (OT)--Angela Neill’s first-half goal gave Huntington Beach the lead, but Melissa Matsuda scored an early second-half goal to tie the score for host Fountain Valley (3-8-1, 0-0-1).

No. 8 Edison 1, Marina 0--Shannon Leslie scored from 20 yards off Jenny Roquemore’s assist in the first half for visiting Edison (11-3-1, 1-0). Marina is 7-6, 0-1.

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 4, No. 7 Mater Dei 0--Lindsay Greco scored two goals and Chaundra King had one goal and two assists for the Cougars (10-0-3, 1-0-1). Mater Dei is 8-3-2, 0-1-1.

No. 9 San Clemente 2, Dana Hills 0--Ricci Lugo and Emily Ernsdorf scored first-half goals for host San Clemente (11-2-2, 1-0-1).

In the Sea View League:

No. 4 Santa Margarita 1, No. 5 Woodbridge 1--Jenny Anderson scored in the 79th minute from six yards for host Santa Margarita (6-2-5, 0-0-1).

Woodbridge (9-2-3, 0-0-1) scored first when Ina Cain moved 20 yards downfield before scoring on a left-footed shot from 25 yards in the 28th minute.

El Toro 3, Corona del Mar 2--Nicole Imech scored the game-winner for the Chargers (6-4-1, 1-0) with six minutes remaining. El Toro’s Lauren Orlandos scored on a penalty kick two minutes into the second half to tie it, 2-2.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 6, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--St. Margaret’s outshot Capistrano Valley Christian, 33-1, to set a school record for shots. Brittany Hunsaker scored two goals for the Tartans (1-6, 1-0).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 1, El Dorado 0 (OT)--Gina McAskill scored the game-winning goal off an assist from freshman Nicole Woiemberghe in the first half of overtime for host Cypress (6-6, 1-0). El Dorado is 7-6-2, 0-1.

Katella 3, Century 0--Goalkeeper Ellen Meunier stopped a penalty kick in the 78th minute for Katella (6-3-2, 1-0).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 2, Fullerton 1--Simi Phull scored both goals in the first half for visiting Sunny Hills (8-1-6, 1-0).

In the Garden Grove League

Garden Grove 6, Rancho Alamitos 2--Erin Griswold scored four goals for visiting Garden Grove (5-4, 2-0).

La Quinta 7, Bolsa Grande 3--Sarah Skinner scored four goals for host La Quinta (4-3-1, 2-0).

Ocean View 1, Rosary 1--Katie Lennon scored the tying goal with five minutes remaining for Rosary (6-4-2, 1-0-1). Allison Nofziger scored off an assist from Kelly Jameson for visiting Ocean View (6-7-4, 1-0-1).

Saddleback 2, Westminster 2--Janet Antunez scored the tying goal in the final minute for visiting Saddleback (4-1-4, 0-1-1).

Orange Lutheran 4, Brethren Christian 0--Erin Lea scored all four goals for Orange Lutheran (10-3-2, 1-1).

Buena Park 1, Sonora 0--Alejandro Ramos scored in the 60th minute for Buena Park (7-7, 1-0).

Fullerton 1, Sunny Hills 0--Joaquin Rincon scored in the 60th minute and Aaron McCann posted his fourth shutout for Fullerton (5-6-1, 1-0).
