Concordia Goes Cold, Falls in Title Game

Concordia only managed one field goal in the final 10 minutes in a 69-66 loss to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), in the championship game of the Eagle men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at Concordia.

Concordia (10-7) held a 61-50 lead with 10 minutes 32 seconds left to play when Olivet Nazarene (12-5) rallied and scored 10 straight points. Concordia’s Tyler Ream made two free throws to make it 63-60 with 4:10 left. Forward Matt Sebastian made a layup with 19 seconds remaining to cut Olivet Nazarene’s lead to 67-66.

Junior guard Josh Giles, who finished with 21 points, missed a jump shot that would have given the Eagles the lead with six seconds to play.

After being fouled, Olivet Nazarene’s Zach Freeman, who scored a game-high 23 points, sealed the victory with two free throws with three seconds remaining.

Giles and Freeman were named named to the all-tournament team. Olivet Nazarene’s Jack Michales was named tournament MVP.

In the Cal Lutheran tournament:

Cal Lutheran 84, Chapman 69--Justin Muth scored 24 points and Mike Dulaney scored 20 points to lead the Kingsmen (6-5). Cal Lutheran led by 18 at the half and never trailed.

Tim Werdel and Sammy Bell each scored 17 points for Chapman (9-5).

In the UC San Diego tournament:

UC San Diego 67, Southern California College 53--Joel Foote had 16 points, including four three-pointers, to lead UC San Diego (15-2) in the championship game.

Mike Wall had 13 points and 13 rebounds for UC San Diego.

Steve James scored 11 and Kevin Bradley and Jabari Simmons each had 10 for SCC (5-12).

Wall was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

UC San Diego’s Foote and Tyler Garratt and the Vanguards’ Simmons and Dennis Keane were selected to the all-tournament team.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 75, Hope International 54--Geoff Jones scored 14 in less than eight minutes to lead Fresno Pacific (9-8).

Andre Simmons had 14 points and four steals for Hope International (3-14).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 87, Hope International 39--Teresa Kamps scored 17 points to lead Fresno Pacific (7-8).

Denise Silva had 14 points and 15 turnovers for Hope International.

Holly Limpach had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Royals.

Southern California College 74, Christian Heritage 57--Sara Herkenhoff scored 18 points and Kristi Wright had 17 and eight steals to lead SCC (11-5).

Kelly Boeke had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Vanguards.
