Edison, Los Alamitos Struggle

Share

The Sunset League girls’ soccer game between Edison and Los Alamitos Tuesday was not a shining example of how two of the county’s best should play.

The sixth-ranked Chargers were unable to capitalize on open opportunities, sailing shot after shot over the goal, and the third-ranked Griffins (12-1-3, 1-0-1) played sloppy and lethargic soccer, and the game at Edison High ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Chargers (11-3-2, 1-0-1) outshot Los Alamitos, 14-5, but only six of those shots were on target.

“Our shooting was terrible,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said. “If our shooting is on, we win. When you don’t put your shots in the frame . . . All we were doing was kicking three-point field goals.”

The shots that were on mark ran into a roadblock, Griffin freshman goalkeeper Ashley DeAlejandro, who pulled down the few Charger shots that had a chance to go in.

“She was rock solid,” Crooks said of DeAlejandro, who got her fingertips on the potential game-winning goal with seconds to go in overtime.

Los Alamitos Coach Mossy Kennedy was upset that DeAlejandro was tested as much as she was, recording six saves.

“This is the first time other people have had a chance to see her work,” Kennedy said. “Prior to this point, we haven’t been that exposed in the box.”

Kennedy was unsure of why his team played with such a lack of enthusiasm.

“I don’t know. It could be a letdown after our overtime victory over Esperanza Thursday,” he said. “But, we know we are better than we played today.”
