Moll’s Goal Puts Westlake in First
Mike Moll scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute and the Westlake High boys’ soccer team moved into first place in the Marmonte League with a 2-1 victory Friday over host Royal.
Moll, a defender, scored from 55 yards on a free kick for his third goal of the season, helping the Warriors (8-8-1, 3-2-1 in league play) move ahead of Newbury Park, which tied Simi Valley on Friday.
“We want to get in the playoffs and this definitely helps us,” Westlake Coach Bill Propster said.
Jason Cheng scored Westlake’s other goal in the first half, taking an assist from Matt DeMattos.
In another boys’ soccer game:
Simi Valley 2, Newbury Park 2--John Passanante and Luke Ollett scored second-half goals to boost Simi Valley (6-4-5, 1-0-4) to another Marmonte League tie at Newbury Park (3-3 in league).
Passanante scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute after Sergio Renes was fouled, and he assisted on Ollett’s goal in the 67th minute.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Westlake 2, Royal 0--Tasha Spangler and Jenna Wirtz scored and goalkeepers Katie Peck and Claire Connor combined on their fourth shutout for Westlake (12-0-1, 6-0), the top-ranked team in the Times’ regional poll.
Chaminade 2, Flintridge Sacred Heart 1--Tara Donoghue took a pass from Kelly Lavery and scored from 18 yards in the 65th minute, snapping a 1-1 tie for the third-ranked Eagles (14-3-1, 3-1) in a Mission League game at Flintridge Sacred Heart.
Chaminade played the final 12 minutes short-handed after a player was red-carded.
Simi Valley 3, Newbury Park 0--Allison Cameron scored twice, with assists from Michelle Thuotte and Mindy Gondrez, and the Pioneers (10-6-1, 3-2) did all of their scoring in the first half of a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Thuotte has 10 assists this season. Simi Valley outshot Newbury Park, 22-3.
La Reina 4, Bishop Diego 0--Monica Thompson scored three goals and the Regents (8-5, 1-1) outshot the Cardinals, 34-1, in a Tri-Valley League game at La Reina.
Oak Park 2, Fillmore 0--Rebecca Carroll scored a goal and assisted on another for the Eagles (6-8, 2-0) in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.
Monroe 4, Poly 1--Liz Nemeth scored two goals for the Vikings in a Mid-Valley League game at Monroe.
Jordana Cail scored a goal and assisted on another for Monroe (5-3, 2-0). Mariela Barragan scored for Poly.
Louisville 5, Marymount 0--Kathrin Ianiro scored two goals and sophomore Kim Morgan recorded her eighth shutout for the Royals (9-1-2) in a nonleague game at Louisville.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Crescenta Valley 8, Agoura 7--Shelley Stiles scored the last of her five goals with 4:07 left to break a 7-7 tie for the host Falcons (8-3)
