Bryans Claim Twin Titles at USTA Event

Rio Mesa High graduates Mike and Bob Bryan won the doubles championship, and Bob captured the singles title at the $15,000 U.S. Tennis Assn. Futures of Miami tournament on Sunday at Florida International University.

The 20-year-old twins defeated Scott Humphries of Alamo, Calif., and Jim Thomas of Dayton, Ohio, 6-3, 6-2, in the final. It was the fifth consecutive tournament title for the Bryans, who turned professional last summer after winning the NCAA doubles title for national-champion Stanford.

Bob Bryan, 1998 NCAA singles champion, beat Kris Goosens of Belgium, 6-2, 7-5, in the singles final.

VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge finished third out of 20 men’s volleyball teams at the UC Santa Barbara tournament last weekend.

The Matadors lost to USC in the semifinals and defeated Arizona in the third-place match.

Eckhard Walter of Northridge had 17 kills against Arizona and Junior Mosones added nine.

Former Buena High middle blocker Matt Prosser had 16 kills and eight blocks for Long Beach State in its victory over USC in the championship match.

EQUESTRIAN

La Reina High won the overall team high-point championship Sunday in the Interscholastic Equestrian League’s third show of the season.

The individual overall high-point championship went to Mickey Sullivan of Thousand Oaks Hillcrest Christian. Jamie Taylor of Viewpoint won varsity individual high-point honors, and Heather Lake of Calabasas was the reserve champion.

In dressage, Andrea Morillas of Agoura was high-point winner of the varsity division.
