Mater Dei Knocks Off No. 2 Edison

Kristian Kirkpatrick scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds, leading host Mater Dei to a 56-46 nonleague victory over No. 2 Edison in girls’ basketball Saturday night.

Earlier this week, the eighth-ranked Monarchs (16-4) defeated No. 5 San Clemente.

Maile Shimoda had nine points and 10 assists for Mater Dei, which led 27-22 at the half and never lost the lead.

Allison Libeu led Edison (17-5) with 16 points.

In other nonleague girls’ basketball:

No. 6 El Toro 87, Long Beach Poly 68--Giuliana Mendiola scored 36 and her sister, Gioconda, had 30, including four three-pointers, to lead host El Toro (14-3).

Huntington Beach 55, No. 7 Westminster 42--Freshman Kelsey Ball scored 20, going nine of 11 from the field, to lead Huntington Beach (14-7).

Courtney McKinney had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Oilers.

Troy 66, Rosary 55--Veronica Johns-Richardson had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead Troy (21-0, 5-0).

Maggie Barnett scored 18 and Romina Bollini had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Rosary (14-8, 4-1).

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Whittier Christian 66, Orange Lutheran 63--Matt Martinez scored 21 points to lead Whittier Christian (12-8, 3-3).

Jason Whieldon scored a game-high 30 points for Orange Lutheran (9-9, 3-3).

In the Santa Ana Valley girls’ water polo tournament:

Whittier California 7, Santa Ana Valley 3--Jessica Uroff scored three goals to lead California (13-7) in the championship game.

Anabel Ochoa scored two goals for Santa Ana Valley. Ochoa helped Valley advance to the championship, scoring four goals in a 10-4 victory over Ocean View.

Saddleback 10, Ocean View 3--Angelica Romeo, Liz Carlenos, and Agnes Kanska each scored three goals for Saddleback.

In the San Clemente wrestling tournament:

Villa Park wins--Villa Park won with 185.5 points, led by Matt Mahoney, who avenged his only loss of the year to Michael McDougall of Long Beach Millikan with a 14-9 decision in the 189-pound championship match.

Andy Twentyman of El Toro pinned all four of his opponents in a cumulative time of 5 minutes 57 seconds, en route to the championship at 152.
