Arenas Sets Records in Grant Win

Gilbert Arenas set a Grant High record by making 20 free throws in the Lancers’ 72-65 victory over Canoga Park in an East Valley League game Wednesday at Canoga Park.

The Hunters (3-16, 0-5 in league play) closed to within 61-59 on a three-point basket by reserve John Limsakul with three minutes remaining, but Arenas scored 17 of his 46 points in the fourth quarter.

Limsakul and Mike Bell each scored 15 points for Canoga Park.

Arenas also set a school record by attempting 25 free throws. He scored 11 of Grant’s 18 points in the second quarter when the Lancers (16-4, 4-1), ranked No. 8 in the region by The Times, went ahead to stay by closing out the period with an 8-0 run.

Harvard-Westlake 94, Crespi 77--Russell Lakey had 33 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Wolverines (12-9, 5-2) in a Mission League victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Eric Geffner added 18 points and 14 rebounds for Harvard-Westlake, which led, 57-32, before withstanding a 25-3 Crespi run.

Andrew Moore scored 21 points and Mike Luderer and Marcin Jagoda each added 14 for No. 6-ranked Crespi (12-6, 5-2).

Cleveland 77, Taft 68--Kent Dennis made 16 of 17 free throws and finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds for Cleveland (15-4, 5-0) in a West Valley League victory at Taft.

Brian Smith added 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Cavaliers (15-4, 5-0), who are on a six-game winning streak and have won nine of their past 10. No. 7-ranked Cleveland rallied from a 29-28 halftime deficit to lead by as many as 15 points in the second half.

Shayne Berry had 13 points and Raja Boykins and Thaddis Bosley each added 10 for Taft (10-5, 3-2).

Alemany 74, Notre Dame 66--Devin Montgomery scored 28 points and Rene Maynard added 17 for No. 4-ranked Alemany (12-5, 5-2) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Cody Pearson had 28 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, and Dante Ward had 21 points for Notre Dame (7-14, 1-6).

Newbury Park 74, Royal 71--Brian Polen scored 16 points with 14 rebounds for the Panthers in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

The Panthers (14-4, 6-1) stretched their lead to 74-68 with one minute to play on consecutive jump shots by Will Svitek and Dan Block. Brandon Foster led Royal (7-13, 1-6) with 16 points.

Simi Valley 92, Moorpark 53--Rafael Berumen scored 26 points and had 14 rebounds for the No. 1-ranked Pioneers (20-2, 7-0) in a Marmonte League game.

Agoura 66, Thousand Oaks 59--Garrett Lepisto had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Patterson added 15 points for the Chargers (10-11, 4-3) in a Marmonte League victory at Agoura.

Marcus Ellis scored 14 points for Thousand Oaks (11-10, 1-6).

Poly 64, Van Nuys 56--James Word scored 25 points, had seven steals and 10 rebounds and Harold Berreondo contributed 14 assists as Poly (10-10, 4-1) won a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys.

Abe Morabbi scored 27 points for Van Nuys (5-13, 1-4).

Buena 56, Rio Mesa 46--Danny Thompson scored 18 points and Peter Brown scored 17 with 15 rebounds and the Bulldogs (9-12) won a nonleague game at Rio Mesa.
