Aliso Niguel’s First Basketball Coach Resigns
Ken Goldstone, boys’ basketball coach at Aliso Niguel, has resigned. According to Aliso Niguel Athletic Director Mike Middlebrook, Goldstone will teach next year at San Clemente, where he lives, and assist San Clemente football Coach Eric Patton.
Goldstone began Aliso Niguel’s basketball program when the school opened in 1994. He compiled a 66-65 record, with one second-place finish in the Pacific Coast League and two thirds.
SOCCER
The A-League Orange County Zodiac will face the Division 3 Carolina Dynamo at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Ana Stadium in the the second round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Tonight, the Zodiac (8-6) will face the Vancouver 89ers (6-6) in an A-League game at Santa Ana Stadium at 7:30. Saturday, the Zodiac will host Pumam Unam of the Mexican First Division at 7:30 p.m.
BASEBALL
Bret Halbert, a Santa Ana College sophomore left-handed pitcher, has signed a letter of intent to attend Chico State this fall.
Halbert, 21, who graduated from Western High, posted a 4-1 record and a 4.95 earned run average in 13 games for Santa Ana. In his one start, Halbert defeated Saddleback 9-4 to send Santa Ana into the state tournament.
