Residents can root for their choice of names for the city’s first canine park on Oak Canyon road at Wednesday’s Community Services Commission meeting.

City officials received more than 150 submissions after starting the naming game, said Libby Cowan, superintendent of the department. A Canine Park Working Group will recommend the top five picks from that list at the meeting; commissioners are expected to make the final choice after a public hearing.

Set to be christened this fall, the canine park initially will offer a fenced, two-acre playground for dogs to run without leashes. Benches, extra trees and dog fountains will be added as donations allow, said Chris Quevedo of the Animal Care Center; $4,500 already has been collected for the extra amenities. Commissioners are expected to review and approve final design plans for the park at their August meeting.
