Blaze Causes $90,000 in Damage to Newport Home
Firefighters made quick work Friday of an early morning fire that caused about $90,000 in damage to a single-family residence in Newport Beach.
Though no one was hurt in the 12:24 a.m. blaze, firefighters had to rescue two family pets from the flames, said Fire Department spokesman John Blauer.
In only his second shift on the job in Newport Beach, firefighter Brett Sutherland heard the weak cry of a cat and searched through the smoke to save it. Firefighters also rescued a dog from the fire, which is still under investigation.
The three-bedroom home in the 1600 block of Bonnie Doone Terrace sustained heavy smoke damage, with the main fire damage confined to the garage, Blauer said.
