Carder Will Seek Probe of Canyons

From Staff Reports

Brent Carder, football coach at Antelope Valley College, said Tuesday he plans to file a request with the state commissioner’s office for an investigation into alleged illegal recruiting violations by College of the Canyons.

Carder said three of his assistants told him they saw Coach Chuck Lyon of Canyons and assistant Leon Criner talking to players on the field after an all-star high school football game at Antelope Valley College on June 12.

Canyons, which fielded a football team for the first time in 17 years last season, is not allowed to recruit players in the Antelope Valley recruiting area unless players from high schools in that area make contact with coaches first. Even if that occurs, coaches cannot speak to potential recruits within another school’s recruiting boundaries.

Sue Bozman, a spokesperson for Canyons, said Dr. Dianne Van Hook, school president, began an internal investigation into the alleged violations after they were brought to her attention earlier this month, but said, “It would be inappropriate to comment on the details or facts at this time.”

Lyon, who guided Canyons to a 7-4 record and a postseason bowl berth last year, said he wasn’t at the all-star game because he was fishing at a lake in the Sierra Nevada the night of the game.
