Ventura’s Arroyo Commits to Chico

David Arroyo , a pitcher-third baseman for Ventura College, has committed to Chico State, defending NCAA Division II champion.

Arroyo, a graduate of Buena High, posted a 5-3 record and 3.40 earned-run average for Ventura last spring. He also batted .370.

SWIMMING

* Breaststroke specialist Stella Flores of Albuquerque, N.M., has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Flores, a four-year varsity swimmer at Albuquerque High, was a two-time New Mexico champion in the 100-yard breaststroke. She has best times of 1:04.85 in the 100 and 2:21.9 in the 200.

Dan Trott, a distance freestyle specialist from Albuquerque High, is expected to walk on to the Northridge men’s team. His best times are 1:47.00 in the 200 freestyle and 4:47.00 in the 500 freestyle.

GOLF

Jason Vaught of Ventura shot two-over-par 73 to win the boys’ 15-17 division of the Bugle Boy Championship on Thursday at Simi Hills Golf Course.

Vaught finished one stroke ahead of Ali Siam of Westlake Village in the Ventura County Golf Assn. event.

Charlene Alfonso of Agoura Hills finished at 81 to win the girls’ 13-17 division by one stroke over Julie McKenna of Newbury Park.

Kyle Dowden of Somis totaled 77 to win the boys’ 13-14 division by two strokes over Ramie Sprinkling of Camarillo.

TENNIS

* Jason Cook of Calabasas and Jeff Morrison won the doubles championship of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Futures tournament last weekend in Chico.

Cook, who helped UCLA finish second in the NCAA Championships last spring, and Morrison, who won the 1999 NCAA Division I singles title for Florida, defeated Brandon Hawk and Doug Root, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, in the final.

* Notre Dame High is seeking candidates to coach boys’ and girls’ tennis.

SUMMER CAMPS

* The first of three five-day sessions of the Lu Dog Basketball Camp for boys and girls 6-14 will be conducted Monday through Friday at Cal Lutheran.

The other sessions are Aug. 2-7 and Aug. 9-13. Times for all sessions are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The camps will be directed by Rich Rider, Cal Lutheran men’s coach. Cost is $135 per person.

* The Master’s College summer basketball camps for boys and girls 7-16 will be conducted July 26-29 and Aug. 2-5 at The Master’s in Santa Clarita.
