Starks, Driscoll Win Diving Titles for Mission Viejo

Eight Mission Viejo Nadadores qualified for the Junior National Diving Championships on the second day of the Zone E Championships in Beaverton, Ore.

Derek Starks placed first in the boys’ 14-15 division platform and Kimberly Driscoll took the top spot in the girls’ division.

In the girls’ 13-and-under division, Alyssa Gibson, Tess Schofield and Carrie Quinn took the final three qualifying spots in the one-meter competition and in the boys’ 16-18 division, Ray Vincent, Robbie Quinn and Louis Gagnet all qualified on the one-meter springboard.

The Junior National Diving Championships are in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 2-9.

BASEBALL

The Fullerton Stingers had no problem advancing to the second round of the AAU 14-and-under World Series, defeating the Tulsa Redskins, 18-1, Saturday in Chickasha, Okla.

Joey Charboneau pitched three scoreless innings for the Stingers, striking out six. Charboneau also hit two doubles and had five runs batted in. The Stingers will play Powder County, Ga., in the second round.

CYCLING

Wolfgang Fasching of Austria took the lead from Andreas Clavadetscher of Liechtenstein in the Race Across America bicycle competition, arriving at station #18 in Pagosa Springs, Col., at 5:20 p.m. PST, on the third day of racing.

Fasching, 31, was in ninth place at the beginning of the second day but had pulled into fourth place late in the afternoon on Friday, before taking the lead in Colorado on Saturday.

RACQUETBALL

Defending champion Brian Hawkes of Laguna Hills advanced to the semifinals of the National Outdoor Racquetball Championships, defeating Orange’s Andy Solis in the quarterfinals Saturday at Golden West College.

Hawkes will play Craig Lane of Alabama, a former Huntington Beach resident in today’s semifinals. Lane defeated Huntington Beach’s Greg Freeze to advance. In the other semifinal: Orange’s Greg Solis will face Costa Mesa’s Kevin Booth.

The open singles’ final will begin at 4 p.m. and doubles at 5 p.m. at Golden West College.
