Crews Control 240-Acre Brush Fire
A brush fire that blackened 240 acres was extinguished by early Tuesday morning, county fire officials said.
The blaze, which broke out Monday afternoon in the eastern part of Simi Valley, did not threaten any homes, according to Joe Luna, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, which started about 2:30 p.m. Monday about 200 yards north of the Ronald Reagan Freeway and east of Kuehner Drive. Flames moved east Monday night toward Rocky Peak Fire Road near the Ventura County-Los Angeles County line.
Because of the rocky terrain, firefighters battled most of the blaze from the air, using four water-dropping helicopters. Some fire crews hiked in to build a fire line to stop the blaze from spreading.
The fire was the third largest this season in Ventura County. A fire near Lake Piru burned 2,800 acres two weeks ago, and another blaze in late June at Kings Campground in the northeastern county scorched 650 acres.
